The Career Prototypes assistant will work within the Career Advising & Professional Development Office (CAPD), which helps MIT students with their career needs including researching internships, attending job fairs, applying to graduate school, preparing for interviews and negotiating offers. 

The Career Prototypes Assistant will provide support for career prototyping opportunities including but not limited to IAP micro-internships, career exploration fellowships and job shadowing experiences. Furthermore, the student worker will help to identify and outreach to employers across Boston/Cambridge to post summer internships, IAP internships and short-term career opportunities. The student worker will help the Assistant Director of Career Prototypes to pinpoint the needs, behaviors, and pain points of MIT undergraduates or graduate students searching for an internship.  

What You’ll Do: 

Job Shadowing Experiences 

  • Search LinkedIn and the Alumni Directory to identify alumni who are potential candidates for hosting a student for a job shadowing opportunity. 
  • Send outreach emails to potential alumni hosts. 
  • Develop marketing materials and social media posts using Canva to promote job shadowing opportunities to current students. 
  • Provide clerical support to match student applications to potential job shadowing opportunities. 

Micro-internships 

  • Curate a roster of organizations within the biotech, climate and sustainability, and design sectors in the Boston area. Leverage LinkedIn's ‘'Find Alumni' feature and the Alumni Directory to identify companies employing MIT alumni. 
  • Help the Assistant Director of Career Prototypes with marketing tasks to recruit employers to post IAP micro-internships and other short-term opportunities for MIT students. 
  • Update a current database of alumni micro-internship hosts. 
  • Use Canva to design flyers and social media posts to promote career prototype opportunities to MIT students.  
  • Use email templates to market micro-internship or job shadowing opportunities to MIT students. 
  • Answer commonly asked employer questions regarding posting a micro-internship.
  • Work with students who completed a micro-internship to write a blog about their experience with a particular company. 

Career Exploration Fellowship 

  • Create CAPD website content which highlights positive experiences of students who utilized career exploration fellowship funding. 

  Time Commitment: (5 hours per week)

  • Ability to execute tasks accurately, efficiently, and with attention to detail
  • Communication and interpersonal skills 
  • Ability to work independently 
  • Strong time management skills 
  • Writing skills 

Dates: July 29th 2024-February 28, 2025 
Pay: $15.00 

Hours:  5 hours/week 

Quantity of weeks: 30 weeks
