About the UNIVERSITY OF FREIBURG

The University of Freiburg, founded in 1457, is one of the most renowned universities in Germany, located in the Southwest corner of Baden-Wuerttemberg near France and Switzerland. With eleven faculties, around 240 degree programs, and 453 full professorships as well as 28 junior professorships, it covers a broad interdisciplinary spectrum with high-quality research and teaching. The University of Freiburg regularly takes top positions in prestigious rankings. In the Shanghai Ranking, for example, it comes in at fifth place in nationwide comparison and is listed among the 101–150 best universities worldwide.

The University currently has around 24.500 students, 4.745 doctoral candidates, and a total of 8.489 employees, 5.936 of them in academic positions. Twenty-three Nobel laureates are associated with the University of Freiburg.

The University of Freiburg is among Europe’s strongest research universities. Its broad spectrum of academic fields provides great potential for scientific research – both at the core of individual disciplines and in collaborative research. Existing partnerships with non-university research institutes such as Freiburg’s Max Planck Institutes and Fraunhofer Institutes as well as regional companies provide a basis for many successful cooperation projects.

Career stages in focus: customized skills development for every target group

The Graduate Centre (GraCe) offers transdisciplinary advising, qualification and financial support. Guided by the intention to create the best possible conditions for doctoral research at the university, GraCe offers a qualification program, advising on the doctoral process, funding options and career coaching as well as counselling should challenges arise. It is possible to pursue a doctoral degree at all eleven faculties of the University of Freiburg. In addition to the “classical” form of individual doctoral studies, the university offers a large selection of structured doctoral programs in various areas. Current employment offers for those interested in PhDs can be found at: uni-freiburg.de/en/jobs/.

Each stage of an academic’s career demands for many different skills. The Centre for Advanced Researcher Development (CARD) offers programs and services tailored to each individual career stage. CARD is designed for all postdoctoral researchers, whether early postdoc, established or leading researchers. CARD also offers the AdvanceMent mentoring program for advanced doctoral researchers in the transition to the early postdoc phase. CARD offers workshops, coaching and mentoring programs and individual advice. From leadership and management through communication skills to academic practice – it gives researchers the tools for their next step in personal development whether in academia or beyond.
